Born and raised in Thunder Bay, ON, I attended high school where my music teachers provided a successful, comprehensive band program which fostered a communal music-making environment. I was also fascinated by orchestras and bands; I'd see the conductor point at a section and something magical would sound. Inspired by this, I began to take up conducting at the early age of 15, and was conducting our high school band by 17. From there it was off to the University of Western Ontario where I spent 4 years maturing and preparing the years to come. Then it was back to Thunder Bay for Teachers' College, and during that summer I was part of the Canadian Wind Condcutors' Development Program where I further refined my conducting and knowledge of the concert band. That September, I found myself in Toronto, and here I am, a high school instrumental music teacher. The benefits of being a part of a band often go well beyond our awareness; spend a day in our music room and you will see students who are connecting socially, emotionally, and mentally with the music and each other. I am very proud and happy to be at David & Mary Thomson.
